Island peak is also called Imja Tse resembles an island in a sea of ice. It was first
climbed in 1953 by a very prestigious team in preparation for the ascent of Everest. It

Nuptse Wall which leads in rising from the Lhotse glacier, Lhotse literally known as
the fourth highest mountain in the world. It is surrounded by a sea of glaciers and
moraines pouring down from seven and eight thousand meter giants.
The mountain itself is an extension of the South Ridge of Lhotse Shar and is
separated by a small col. Above this gap, rising to the south is a classically beautiful

peak also provides some of the most striking scenery in the Khumbu region.
Walking through your destination your trip from Everest base camp you head back
down the Dudh Koshi valley as far as Dingboche. You then turn up the Imja Khola
valley towards Chukhung and Island Peak. Chukhung which is one of the tea houses

Where is Island Peak Located?
Island peak is situated in the Everest region of Nepal right on the Nepalese, Tibetan
border. Island peak is an extension of Lhotse and Everest. The ridgeline drops of
Lhotse and right onto the summit of Island peak. The Imja valley is home to amazing
glaciers running down from 8,000m high in the unique mountain valley.
Island peak has an altitude of Maximum 6,189m and is the best trek in Nepal that
you had never thought it before, Island peak trek is a little bit tough due to the high

Kathmandu. This is a 27-minute flight into the mountains.
Which is the best time to visit Island Peak in Nepal?
Traveler can visit Island peak throughout the year except during the height of
monsoon months June to end of August, Even during the winter, people have
successfully scaled the mountain, although cold weather could be detrimental for
some, It’s not that the mountain is technically difficult to scale, but it rather depends
on how comfortable you are with the extremes of winter months.
The most comfortable and suitable time to go for the trek is in the month of March to
early June which lies in the spring season and in the autumn season on the month of
September to November.
What kind of weather can you experience?
There is a wide range of temperature from 20c to –20c. Typically once you climb in
the month of April, May, late September and October the day time temperatures
range from 0c to 15c on the trek in and typically it is – 5c to – 10c on the summit
night on Island peak. Once the sun comes up it gets warmer and can be warm coming
down from the summit. If the weather is cloudy and windy, this will make it feel
colder.

Here are some itineraries that make your Island Peak tour easier.
• Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel
• Kathmandu – Lukla – Phakding
• This is an hour flight from Katmandu to Lukla Airport (2840m). The trail from
Lukla, leads north from the airstrip and drops steeply for a bit, then descends gently
to Phakding (2700m), your first overnight here. This is a two-hour trek.
• Phakding – Namche
• From Phakding the trail continues north up the Dudh Koshi Valley. (Koshi which
means river in Nepali and it comes down from the Everest glacier). All along this part
of the trail, there is a magnificent forest of Magnolia, rhododendron and giant firs.
On the cliffs above the river, it is possible to see musk deer and Himalayan tar. At
Monjo the trek enters the Sagarmatha National Park. The trail follows the river and
crosses Dudh Koshi and makes a steep climb to Namche (3440m). Namche is a very
colorful Sherpa village where you will see vendors selling antiques and each Saturday
there is an important weekly haat or market.

• Take a rest in Namche
• Namche-Tengboche
• Drive from Namche to Tengbuche
• Tengbuche – Dingboche
• The trail follows the Imja Khola and gradually ascends to Dingboche (4410m).
From here the views are great and the mountain views are outstanding. This is four
hrs walk.
• Dingboche to Island peak base camp
• Hike up the Imja Khola valley to Chukkung, a small summer settlement at 4730m.
The views from Chukkung and further up the valley on the moraines towards Island
peak (6189m) is tremendous. The great southern face of Lhotse towers above to the
north. From Chukkung, keep heading up the Imja Khola valley and camp at base
camp 5087m.
• Island peak base camp Rest day.
• Summit day! Island peak (6189m)
• Leave early for the summit. Return to high camp and come down further 300m to
the base camp.
• Island Peak base camp – Pangboche
• Start heading down to Pangboche. This is 5 hrs walk.
• Pangboche- Namche
• Pass the Deboche nunnery and the famous Thyangboche monastery. Stop here for
at least an hr and will tour the nunnery and the monastery.
• Namche – Lukla
• Lukla – Kathmandu
• Rest day in Kathmandu
• Departure.
